Why St Martin Village Means So Much To Me

St Martin Village isn’t just another neighborhood to me. It’s home.
I first lived here when I was about two years old. My grandma and aunt both lived in the St Martin Villa townhomes on Lima Drive, and my mom lived there too. Eventually, we moved from the townhomes into a house on St Martins Avenue. Some of my earliest memories came from this neighborhood and being surrounded by family all in the same area.
I lived here growing up, then moved away from 2020 to 2025. But even while I was gone, St Martin Village always meant something to me. Recently, I had the opportunity to buy a home here, and coming back honestly feels full circle.
St Martin Village also has a deep history in Lexington. The neighborhood was established in 1955 and is considered one of the first subdivisions in Lexington built specifically for African American families during a time when housing opportunities were limited. It was originally developed on farmland near Georgetown Road and Price Road and quickly became a place where families could put down roots and build generational wealth.
One thing I’ve always noticed is how connected the community feels. Many families have lived here for generations, and that sense of history is still present today. Churches surrounding the neighborhood also add to that feeling. Growing up, I always felt like the neighborhood was protected and watched over, and that’s something that stuck with me.
Coming back now as a homeowner hits different. I’m not just someone who grew up here anymore. I’m invested in the neighborhood. I care about what happens here and want to see it continue to grow while still keeping the character that makes it special.
From a real estate perspective, I also believe St Martin Village is a hidden gem in Lexington. It’s centrally located, close to downtown, and still has that neighborhood feel you don’t always get. Whether someone is buying their first home, downsizing, or investing, it’s an area worth paying attention to.
For me, this isn’t just about real estate. It’s about being part of something bigger. It’s about coming back to a place that helped shape me.
And honestly, it just feels good to be home.
